Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
